It is with great sadness that we report the passing of a Texas Aquatic Legend: Renee Magee.

S.R. “Mac” McDonald Remembers Renee:

In 2007, I was called to Jury Duty. Sitting with 60 other voters in a Harris County courtroom, we were each questioned as to our fitness to serve on a jury:

  • Do you know the defendant?

  • Do you know the defendant's attorney?

  • Do you know the prosecuting attorney?

after exhausting seemingly all possible conflicting relationships, "Do you know of any reason you should be deemed unqualified...?" I raised my hand -

"What if I know the Judge?"

The Honorable Justice Renee Magee peered down from the bench and asked, "Sir, how is it that you know me?" So I responded, "You used to be one helluva backstroker for Clear Lake."

This elicited a string of never-before-asked questions in a jury pool from the now awakened denizens of the courtroom. After singing her previously unknown praises to her now newly impressed officers of the court, Judge Magee thanked me for my memories, but then replied, "...however Coach McDonald, you are NOT dismissed."

So much for "high friends in high places."
